Alvin Leroy Layne

Alvin Leroy Layne, 81, of Grottoes, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2025, at Sentara RMH Medical Center.

He was born on May 17, 1943, and was a son of the late Elbert "Pete" and Janie "Jack" (Lawson) Layne.

Alvin dedicated over 40 years of his life to Reynolds Metals before retiring in 1993. A man of faith, he was a member of Barren Ridge Covenant Brethren Church. His love for music shone through his passion for playing the guitar. A lifelong servant to his community, he was a proud lifetime member of the Grottoes Volunteer Fire Department, and a baseball coach. Above all, he was known as "Pawpaw" to countless loved ones and others who knew him.

Alvin was united in marriage on June 24, 1962 to Nancy (Arehart) Layne, who survives.

Alvin is also survived by children, Sherri Hinkle (Clint), and Jerry Layne (Kim); sister, Patricia (Ronnie) Cash; grandchildren, Jacob McCallister, Kansas Nichole (Josh) Bryant, Robert Roseberry III, Laci Monger (Drew), Janie Marie Elmore (Hunter), Madison Gregory (Michael), Jesse Layne, Kierra Carey (Devon), Mary Grace Graber, and Walker Hinkle; fifteen great-grandchildren; bonus daughter, Donna Graber (Greg).

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a great-grandson, Braydon Roseberry.

Friends and family may visit the home anytime at 403 5th St, Grottoes.

A memorial service celebrating Alvin's life will be held 11 AM on Thursday, March 6, 2025 at Barren Ridge Covenant Brethren Church, with Pastor Janet Elsea officiating. They will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grottoes Rescue Squad or the Grottoes Volunteer Fire Department.
