Alva Elberta Dixon May
Alva Elberta Dixon May was a woman of deep faith, a devoted educator, a generous friend, and an unwavering mother and grandmother. She passed away at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and quiet wisdom. Known for her quick wit, independence, and warm spirit, Alva will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Alva was born on August 6, 1936, in Crockett, Virginia, and passed away on April 29, 2026.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Sallie Copenhaver Dixon, and her daughter, Teresa Ann May.
She is survived by her son, William Earl May; her grandchildren, Sarah Marie Patterson and her husband, Christopher; Mark Tanner Schreiber-May and his wife, Ashley; and William Travis Schreiber-May and his fiancée, Brianna; as well as her great-grandchildren, Andrew, Carson, and Otto. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Alva earned her master's degree in education from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and dedicated 33 years to teaching in Wythe County, Virginia. She was passionate about education and touched the lives of countless students throughout her career. Alva retired from teaching in 1999.
She spent three years living in Kula, Hawaii, and her final nine years in the Grottoes area, where she was close to both her son and daughter.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at Grottoes United Methodist Church.
