Alfred Ray Cline
Alfred Ray (Al) Cline passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2024 at the Bridgewater Retirement Community.
He was born in Harrisonburg on July 22, 1931 to the late Ray S. and Nell H. Cline.At the age of 17 months they moved to Staunton, VA. Alfred attended Staunton City Schools graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in 1947. He followed up with education at Bridgewater College graduating in 1951. Following some temporary employment with the Highway Department (now called VDOT) he was called into military service during the Korean Conflict.
Having had some medical courses at Bridgewater College he received further training and services in the Army Medical Corps.
Upon discharge, his earlier work at VDOT seemed to be most appealing. He alternated VDOT work with education at Virginia Tech graduating in 1958.
Following work included one year in the Richmond Central Office designing bridges and two years in Fairfax inspecting Beltway construction. From there three years were spent in Culpeper as Assistant Resident Engineer. His final position away was Resident Engineer in Luray where he was responsible for road maintenance and construction in Page, Warren, and Clarke Counties.
In the early 1970's, environmental issues began receiving a lot more attention. He seized the opportunity to return to Staunton to fill the newly created position of District Environmental Manager.
Shortly after returning to Staunton he married longtime friend Melba Melton. They then moved to the family farm in Verona, VA where Al enjoyed some farming, gardening, and playing golf. After approximately 10 years, Melba and Al moved into the Bridgewater Retirement Community.
Melba preceded Al in death on September 25, 2024.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at Pleasant Valley Church Cemetery.
