Yvonne S. Goodson
Yvonne Sparks Goodson, 94, was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend. She passed away peacefully and gracefully on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at her home in Staunton, surrounded by family.Yvonne was born on February 13, 1930 in Russell, Kentucky to Asa Marvin Sparks and Mamie Sophronia Mullins. Yvonne moved to the greater Washington D.C. area in 1934, where she spent her childhood and later worked for the Department of the Interior as an adult. It was there that she met and married her late husband Irvin Lee Goodson, Jr., who went by "Chuck". Together they had six children. In 1969, the Goodson family moved to their family vacation home in McKinley, outside of Staunton, where Yvonne owned and operated a dog grooming business, VIP Groomers, and bred Standard poodles.Yvonne was a longtime member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir for many years and was active in the Women of Bethel group and served as a church Elder. She was an avid reader and loved to travel, having been around the world on numerous adventures with friends and family. She enjoyed socializing with her many friends at The Hilltop Apartments, where she lived, and attending the concerts of her musical family. A devout Christian, she will be remembered for being kind and accepting of everyone.Yvonne is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chuck Goodson; three siblings, Carroll Richardson, Victor Sparks, and Wanda Terry; and two sons, Gary Goodson and Doug Goodson.Yvonne leaves behind many relatives who loved her dearly. She is survived by a special brother-in-law, Bobby Goodson; four children, Sandy Goodson (Peter Marks), Dale Goodson, Danny Goodson (Elizabeth Fooks), and Janice Goodson (Curtis Hite); seven grandchildren, Rosie McDermott (Kevin), Emma Saveika (Tim), Drayton Turner, April Cross (Aaron), Alex Goodson (Lorrie), Sophie Greenwood (Tom), and Sam Goodson; eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at Bethel Presbyterian Church (563 Bethel Green Road Staunton, VA). Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The service will be followed by a reception with family and friends at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church.
