William "Sud" Maynard Southard

William Maynard Southard, “Sud,” age 95, passed away in his home on Sunday, April 5, 2026. He was born on August 16, 1930 to Charles Vinton and Willie May Southard. He grew up in Bridgewater, VA and graduated from Bridgewater High School. He served in the US Army for three years, stationed in London, England and Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He worked as a salesman early in his career and eventually began his own businesses, including Sundance Properties, The Hickory Pit, etc. Maynard retired from business in his mid sixties and spent his retirement years enjoying the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, and golfing. He had several Jack Russell Terriers who were his constant companions in his later years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings- Charles and Oliver Southard, Phyllis Tutwiler and Janice Chapman, his former wife and mother of his children, Alice (Dott) Shull and second wife, Jean Click Southard and son, Hugh Southard. He is survived by his children, Mike (Pam) Southard and their daughter, Mariette (Brice), Melissa Anthony, Ben Southard and his son, Skylar, Sally Justice (Bill) and two step-children, Sallie (Chuck) Bedall and their children, Cory (Dave) and Ryan, and Tee Click and his children Cole and Will. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, April 17th at Johnson Funeral & Cremation Service in Bridgewater, VA. There will be a graveside service on Saturday April 18th for immediate family.
