Wilcher "Butch" Franklin Kirksey
Wilcher Franklin “Butch” Kirksey, Jr., 59, of Staunton, passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday, February 26, 2026.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, on December 19, 1966, Butch was the son of the late Wilcher Franklin “Frank” Kirksey, Sr. and Margie Velma (Suggs) Kirksey.
Butch lived a life full of simple joys, infectious enthusiasm, and unwavering love for those closest to him. A man of deep and abiding faith, he was devoted to the Lord, faithful in his nightly prayers, and quietly reflected Christ’s love in the kindness he showed each day. He had a signature cowboy swagger in his walk, adored Elvis Presley (lighting up at the first notes of any song), and cherished his almost-daily strawberry banana smoothies from Micah's in Stuarts Draft. Above all, he loved deeply and openly—especially Mandy, with whom he shared a special bond. Every morning, calling Mandy on the phone was the highlight of his day; it was a ritual that brought him pure happiness.
For the last 18 months, Butch was blessed to be part of a sponsored residential program for individuals with intellectual disabilities, where he became a cherished member of an extended family. He touched everyone he met, including his caregivers Thomas Morris and Donna Hawkins who considered him precious and irreplaceable. He formed an especially sweet connection with the little ones in the family—his favorite “little people,” Carter Hawkins, Kamden Portch, and Aven Portch—who adored him in return. Butch became a huge part of their world, and they his.
He is survived by many special friends who held a place like family in his heart, including Mandy Hawkins, Terry Hawkins, Anita Perry, Donna Hawkins, Belinda Boykin Reed, and Thomas Morris. Terry Hawkins spoiled him completely rotten with companionship and care—thank you for always being there.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 22, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. by Pastor Shawna Hiner at the Verona Community Center, 465 Lee Hwy., Verona 24482.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory in Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
