Thomas "Tom" Walton Rankin

December 21, 1944 - November 21, 2024

Thomas Walton “Tom” Rankin, 79, husband of Carolyn Ashby Rankin, of Staunton, Virginia passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at his residence.

Mr. Rankin was born in Staunton, Virginia on December 21, 1944, a son of the late Claude Walton Rankin and Frances (Harris) Rankin.

Tom was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, the Blanche Gilbert Sunday School class and a veteran of the United States Navy, serving his country during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed woodworking in his spare time, participating in outdoor sports activities and attending the sporting events of his children and grandchildren.  Tom was a loving and dedicated husband and father, devoting his time and energies to family responsibilities and he kept his family safe.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of fifty-six years, is a son, Timothy Walton Rankin of Waynesboro; a daughter, Tonya (Rankin) Becker and her husband, Britt of Staunton; five grandchildren, Samuel Ashby Rankin, Maxwell Ashby Becker, Alec Becker, Zac Becker and his fiancée, Maria Bayliss, and Madison Becker and her fiancé, Jason Kros; and two great grandchildren, Hayes Becker and Bennett Becker.  

A memorial service will be held at St. James United Methodist Church by Pastor Lester Kennedy on Saturday, November 30, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. The family will welcome all who would like to honor the memories of Tom. Following the service, there will be a light lunch and a time of fellowship in our Fellowship Hall and all are welcome. Tom’s family is so grateful for the love and care he was given by the very dedicated team of medical care professionals, nurses, and employees of Martha Jefferson Hospital and the Hospice of the Piedmont team.
