Norman Winston Coakley
Norman Winston Coakley, 82, died Saturday, September 21, 2024, surrounded by loved ones at his home on Rockfish Road, Waynesboro VA after a battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He was born September 16, 1942, at Dale Enterprise, a son of the late Roy Dewitt and Lucy Ellen Terry Coakley.
Mr. Coakley was a 1960 graduate of Turner Ashby High School and completed a two-year program in mechanical drawing at Valley Vocational Technical Center in Fisherville. He also served in the Army National Guard. He worked as a mold maker for General Electric and Genicom in Waynesboro for 38 years.
He married Joyce Ann Rodgers on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 1963.
He was a faithful supporter of Forest Chapel Church of the Brethren in Crimora, where he was a member for about 45 years. He served as deacon, head usher, member of the church board, and member of the stewardship commission and helped serve many meals at the church.
He enjoyed hunting with rifle, muzzleloader, and bow and arrow with his faithful hunting companion and long-time friend John McAllister. He also took special interest in caring for his yard and home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Clint W. Coakley (and wife Rachel) of Hyde Park, Vermont, and Brad T. Coakley (and wife Chrissie) of Crimora; a sister, Loretta C. Miller (and husband John William) of Elkton; a sister-in-law, Shirley Coakley of Knoxville, Tenn.; eleven grandchildren: Joanna Lehman of Clayton MI, Kayla Coakley of Waynesboro, Solomon Coakley of Milton PA, Tiffany Arbogast of Waynesboro, Elijah Coakley of Eden VT, Ashley Irvine of Grottoes, Brittany Rohrbaugh of Crimora, Adah Gehman of Morrisville VT, Amanda Johnson of Waynesboro, Susanna Wenger of Bellingham MA, and Rebekah Coakley of New Holland PA; 21 great-grandchildren; 5 nephews; and 7 nieces.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Carroll B. Coakley of Knoxville, Tenn.
A private burial for the immediate family will be held at St. Jacobs Lutheran Church Cemetery, Mt. Crawford. Pastor David Stewart will officiate. A public memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Forest Chapel Church of the Brethren in Crimora. We have realized the wording in the obituary has caused some confusion. The burial is the only thing that is private. The Memorial Service, meal, and visitation is open to all friends and loved ones. We apologize if for any confusion.
Memorial gifts may be made to Forest Chapel Church of the Brethren, Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah, and the Alzheimer's Foundation.
