Nellie Louise Flora
Nellie Louise Flora, 94, passed away peacefully on October 13th, 2024. She was born May 19, 1930, to John S and Edith (Lickfold) Shumake near New Hope, Virginia. She lived her entire life in the New Hope community. In her youth, she helped her parents with the family farm. She grew up attending church at Union Chapel Evangelical United Brethren and was baptized there. She graduated from Madison College in 1950 with a BBS in Education. She taught in Augusta County schools and retired from the Augusta County Library. She was an active member of Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren, serving on numerous committees and as a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Virginia Home Demonstration Club, the New Hope Garden Club, and Skyline Chapter of the Ford Model A Club for many years. She loved history, particularly Civil War history, and she used this knowledge to help at the Port Republic Museum for many years.
She married Mark R Flora on December 15, 1951. They traveled the United States extensively over their nearly 70 year marriage. Mark preceded her in death on October 18, 2021. She is survived by her children Elizabeth Wilmoth (Steve), John Flora (Carol), and Daniel Flora (Libby). She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and her cat, Cheddar.
A memorial service will be held at Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren Friday, October 18th at 1:30 pm with Rev. Ron Wyrick officiating. A visitation will follow after the service in the church social hall. The burial will be private.
