Mary Simmons

Mary Alice Burns Simmons, 86, of 437 Betsy Bell Road passed away Monday, January 15, 2024 at Augusta Health with family by her side. She was born February 21, 1937 in Augusta County, a daughter of the late Ray and Stella Burns.

Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and Grandma Mary.

Mary loved mowing the lawn, tending to her flower bed and raising fresh vegetables.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James Simmons, to whom she was married for 58 years; two sons, Jerry and Steven Simmons; son-in-law, Glenn Swisher; three sisters, Josephine Fitzgerald, Nancy Furr and Judy Tomlin.

Left to cherish her memory is one daughter, Sandra Swisher of Staunton; four grandchildren, Brian Aumiller and his husband, Gerald of Fredericksburg, Christopher Simmons, and his wife, Bethany of Raphine, Nina Simmons and her fiancé, Timm of Waynesboro and Cassi Thomas of Waynesboro; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Leah and Andrew Simmons; three sisters, Mae Eppard and her husband, Bill of Gloucester Point, Bonnie Burnette and her husband, Carol of Waynesboro and Linda Dinges and her husband, Steve of Waynesboro. Numerous nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law and the extended family of Glenn Swisher are among her living family.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm, Saturday, January 20, 2024 at Charlton and Groome Funeral Home, 619 Lifecore Core Drive, Fishersville and at other times at her daughter, Sandra Swisher’s home.

At a later date a private family interment will be held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Staunton.
