Lynda Metzger

Lynda Sue Metzger passed away peacefully at The Retreat at Fishersville , Fishersville, VA, on September 18, 2024. She was 77 years old.

Lynda was born on May 24, 1947, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and was the oldest child of Bobbie and Evelyn (Coddington) Hull. She grew up in Tiffin, OH, and earned a B.A. degree in International Studies from The Ohio State University. She married Commander Paul C. Metzger, USN (ret.) in 1968 and for the first 15 years of their marriage she focused on raising their two daughters (Cathy and Jennie), gardening, volunteering at a natural food co-op, and learning to cook international cuisine.

Returning to college in 1982, she earned the first B.S. degree in Computer Science awarded at the University of North Florida. In 1984 Lynda and Paul made their home in Virginia Beach, and Lynda embarked on a 27 year career as a computer systems analyst and database administrator with Northrop Grumman. During her career, she received numerous commendations for her work on software upgrades to the Navy's shipboard maintenance tracking system.

Lynda was a passionate advocate for victims of domestic violence and volunteered with the Virginia Beach Court Service Unit. She was their Volunteer of the Year in 2010. Blessed with a beautiful soprano voice, Lynda served as a cantor at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Virginia Beach and, after moving in 2012 to Edenton, NC, at St. Ann Catholic Church.

She was predeceased by her sister, Melody Thomas.

Lynda is survived by her husband, Paul; daughters, Cathy (Essen) Daley and Jennie (Jeff) Boyd; and by her grandchildren: Rachel, Sarah, Michael, Carly, Megan, Lydia, and Lucy. She is also survived by her brother, Brian (Caprice) Hull.

A memorial mass will be held on Friday, October 25,2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church , 301 Sheppard Ct, Waynesboro, VA.

Finally, the family would like to extend special thanks to Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah and the staff of The Retreat at Fishersville for the extraordinary and compassionate care they provided Lynda in the final days of her life.
