Leonard Allen Layman

October 19, 1942 - December 13, 2025

Leonard “Allen” Layman, 83, peacefully left this life on Saturday, December 13, 2025 surrounded by his cherished family.
Mr. Layman was born on October 19, 1942 in Staunton, Virginia, a son of the late Leonard Andrew Layman and Dorothy Virginia (Garland) Layman.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Layman was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald Lee Layman
Mr. Layman was a graduate of Wilson Memorial High School class of 1961 and honorably answered the call to serve his country as a devoted member of the National Guard for twenty years, retiring in 1985. His long tenure in service demonstrated his deep commitment to his community and nation.
Allen’s career journey began by pumping gas at a local service station as a teenager. This early experience set the stage for him, a man defined by a strong work ethic and a quiet commitment to excellence. Allen then spent two years gaining valuable experience at Dupont in Waynesboro, Virginia before committing to higher education. He earned his degree from Blue Ridge Community College and went on to a thirty-year distinguished career with Xerox Corporation, where he was a cornerstone of his department until his retirement in 2003.  After retirement he continued to help others by working as a sales associate at Millers Ace Hardware in Stephens City, Virginia, where they lovingly referred to him as “Pappy”.
While his professional achievements were substantial, his heart was most evident in his devotion to his family. He married his late wife, Joyce Anne (Bartley) Layman on April 9, 1966. They resided in Augusta County until they moved to Lake Frederick in 2009 to be closer to their daughters.
Survivors include two daughters, Kendra Layman (Mike) Grabowski and Wendy Layman (Troy) Oliver; three granddaughters, Bryn (16), Colbie (14) and Laiken (12) Grabowski, (he loved spending time with his girls); a brother, Charles (Nancy) Layman of Grottoes.
In his last few years Allen resided in the Village at Orchard Ridge and made many friends there. Most notably his Fireside Friends and his dear close friend Olga Russell, with whom he shared so many adventures.
Allen’s fondest memories include fishing, working in his wood shop, cutting firewood (with his Dad), and most of all, his trips to Corolla in the Outer Banks with his family. He enjoyed a cold Miller Lite and a cigar while watching all the antics his granddaughters got up to.
Allen will be remembered for his gentle nature, quiet strength, quick wit and the unwavering support he provided to his family.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 18, 2025 at Augusta Memorial Park, in Waynesboro, Virginia by Rev. William “Bill” Trice.
In lieu of flowers, Allen would like donations be made to Round Hill Community Fire and Rescue, 141 Spinning Wheel Lane, Winchester, Virginia 22603. They were always so kind and helpful when he needed them.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
