Judy Eiline (Fitzgerald) Hughes

January 4, 1946 - June 25, 2024

Judy Eiline (Fitzgerald) Hughes, 78, of Middlebrook, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at her residence surrounded by family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Roy Lester Hughes, who passed away recently on January 26, 2024.
Mrs. Hughes was born in Staunton, Virginia on January 4, 1946, a daughter of the late Ethel May Flickenger and Thurman Fitzgerald.
She was raised by her late grandparents, Walter Clark Benson and Mary Elizabeth Benson of Middlebrook, Virginia.
Judy retired from Western State Hospital in 1979, after which she started babysitting at her home. She was known as the “Middlebrook Baby Sitter”. She kept numerous children in the area and always treated them like her own. She remained close with some of them until her passing. Judy was also referred to as the “Middlebrook Greeter”, as she loved sitting on her front porch swing until she was no longer able. Everyone knew that something was wrong if she wasn’t on the porch.
In addition to her parents and grandparents, Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Fitzgerald, Sr.; a half-brother, Leslie Flickenger, Jr.; a half-sister, Sheila Roberts; and a grandson, Mason Lane. 
Surviving, are her children, Lisa Mizer and husband, Tim, and Tommy Hughes and wife, Jennifer; five grandchildren, Hunter Hughes and fiancĂ©e, Cristina Joson Hilardo, Morgan Hughes, Tyler Mizer, Amber Loan and husband, Corey, and Lucas Lane and wife, Taylor; seven great-grandchildren, Levi Loan, Samuel Loan, Jolene Loan, Jett Lane, Addie Lane, Ainsley Lane and Alden Lane; a sister, Dorothy Marie Gilbert and her husband, Ronald of Staunton; a half-sister, Felita Sanchez; two half-brothers, Robert “Bobby” Flickenger and James “Jimmy” Dean Flickenger; three brothers-in-law, Wilford Hughes and wife, Linda, Lewis Hughes and wife, Evalina, and Glenn Hughes and wife, Nancy; six sisters-in-law, Juanita “Sissy” Chittum and husband Stanley “Omer”, Mary Hughes, Martha Kessel, Doris Ashby, Ellen Stubblefield and husband, Donnie, and Sue Berry; and a number of nieces and nephews. Also surviving are special friends, William “Bill” and Sally Brubeck, Jerry Jarvis, and Jeff and Terri Gordon; her bonus children, Bradley Gordon, Daniel Gordon, Annie (Butt) Vasiliadis of Maryland, and Sarah (Butt) Strack of Texas.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2024 at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the residence.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at Middlebrook Church of God by Pastors Merle Dodson and Larry Strickler. 
Burial will follow in Arbor Hill Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Hunter Hughes, Morgan Hughes, Tyler Mizer, Ron Gilbert, Daniel Gordon, and Bradley Gordon.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Rob Marsh, Jerry Jarvis, Ronald Gilbert, Jeff Gordon, Terri Gordon, and members of the Middlebrook Volunteer Fire Department.

The family wishes to extend a special “Thank you” to Jerry Jarvis and the Middlebrook Volunteer Fire Department for stepping up and fulfilling her late husband’s duties, and assisting with the care of Mrs. Hughes.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
