Jean Elizabeth Buel

October 10, 1925 - November 6, 2023

Jean Elizabeth Gesell Buel, our beloved mother and cherished grandmother, peacefully passed away on November 6, 2023, at her residence in Grottoes, VA. Born on October 10, 1925, in Meredith, NY, she was the daughter of the late John and Della (Davis) Gesell.

Upon earning her teaching degree at NY State Teachers College, Oneonta, NY, she taught elementary school. She married the love of her life, Clarence Mervin “Pete” Buel on July 19, 1953. Upon the arrival of her children, she dedicated herself to raising them well. Her surviving children are Pamela (Richard) Hernandez, Peter, Timothy (Gail), Laurie, Cheryl, Amy (David) Johnston, Katherine (Pete) Gohdes (Kenneth Lewis-deceased) and Julie (John-deceased) Kitchen.

Her husband Pete, brothers James and Richard, sister Theris, son John (Judy), and grandson Andrew predeceased her. 19 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, her sister Betty Giudice and multiple nieces and nephews, survive her.

Jean and Pete spent most of their lives as dairy farmers in Bloomville and Milford, NY. They then lived in Otego, NY for many years. Later in life, Jean lived near various children in NY and VA.

Jean was a lifelong dedicated American citizen who never missed her opportunity to vote. She was an avid reader, letter writer, and stamp collector. She loved watching sports, especially the NY Yankees and Syracuse ORANGE basketball!

Jean was a faithful follower of her Lord, Jesus Christ. Her family and friends will gather to celebrate her life and her lasting impact at 4PM on Monday November 20, 2023 at Mt Olive Brethren Church, Pineville, VA. A second celebration of life will be held in the Oneonta, NY area in summer 2024.

While we grieve the loss of our mother, we find solace in the countless memories she leaves behind and the profound influence she had on those who knew her. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jean's name to Parkinson’s Foundation or American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are entrusted to Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes, VA. Online condolences may be shared with the family at johnsonfs.com.
