James Daniel Horst

James Daniel Horst, 83, of Weyers Cave, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2024 at his home, after a short battle with cancer.

He was born on July 15, 1940 and was a son of the late Lloyd S. and Alice (Heatwole) Horst.

James loved his Lord and was a member of Calvary Mennonite Church. He will be well remembered for his friendly smile, generosity, sense of humor, and love of farming and gardening. He was active in agriculture his whole life. He loved spending time on his mountain land, hunting, and checking his trail cameras. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was united in marriage on May 4, 1962 to Loretta (Sonifrank) Horst, who preceded him in death on August 12, 2016.

James is survived by his daughters, Karen (Dan) Hochstetler, and Kathy (Greg) Swartz; three grandchildren, Sarah (Owen) Witmer, Kristen Swartz, and Caleb Swartz; four great grandchildren, Lane Witmer, Cheyenne Witmer, Alison Witmer, and Laurel Witmer; three brothers, Amos (Leta) Horst, Enos (Debbie) Horst, and Reuben(Ruth Ann) Horst; two sisters, Rachel Schrock, and Anna (Gary) Miller; sister-in-law, Martha Horst; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Sheldon Horst; brother, Joseph Horst; and brother-in-law, David Schrock.

A graveside service will be held at 9:30 AM on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at Bank Mennonite Church Cemetery.

A service celebrating James's life will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Calvary Mennonite Fellowship in Mt. Clinton. The service will be livestreamed at https://calvarymennonite.com.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 22, 2024 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Calvary Mennonite Church.
