Ivy Edwards
Ivy Bernice Edwards, 86, of Fishersville, VA, passed away peacefully on May 10th 2025, at the home of her daughter, Lora Parcham, where she had been residing for a short time.
She was born in Chapel Arm, Newfoundland to Cyril and Gladys Newhook on September 18th 1938. She married Sherman Victor Edwards of Bristol, Virginia, on February 16th 1957 in St. John's, Newfoundland.
She was born and raised in Newfoundland by the prominent Newhook family who, in prior years, were renowned for overseeing the building of ships for the US Navy. Following her graduation from High School on October 1954, she went on to receive a professional degree as a Psychiatric Nursing Aide in St. John's Newfoundland on November 26th 1956 and worked at the Hospital for Mental and Nervous Diseases until meeting her future husband, Sherman Edwards, who was serving the US Air Force and stationed at the time in Newfoundland. Upon notification that he was being restationed back to the US, they received written permission by their parents to marry on February 16, 1957. The following 19 years were spent traveling with her husband as he served his country in South Africa, Germany, Turkey, and Japan, during which time; on November 1st 1963 she became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Upon her husband's retirement from the military in 1976, she returned to nursing, employed at the Rome Developmental Center, in New York, as a Mental Therapy Aide. Upon moving to Virginia, around 1978, she and her husband became deeply involved in their church, Staunton Alliance, in the field of evangelism. They later became members of Midway Bible Baptist Church in Fishersville, VA until their deaths. Throughout this period, Ivy also enjoyed making and molding ceramics, as well as crocheting, leaving her family with many precious mementos of her life made from her own hands.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cyril and Gladys Newhook; beloved husband, Sherman Edwards; her daughter, Kathey Ann Edwards-Harold; her son, Sherman Victor Edwards Jr.; her brothers, Arthur Higdon and Derrick Newhook, and her sister, Betty Hendry.
She is survived by her daughter, Lora Jo-ann Edwards-Parcham; her sister, Rosalyn Upshall and her husband, Morgan Upshall; her grandsons, Jason Harold and Brandon Edwards; her two granddaughters, Ivy Elizabeth Eberly and Kayla LaBreeska Adkinson; as well as even great-grandchildren, and one great- great-grandchild.
Family will receive friends on Friday May 16th 2025 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at Charlton and Groome Funeral Home., 619 Lifecore Dr., Fishersville, VA until the time of service at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Richard Owen officiating. Entombment will follow at Augusta Memorial Park, Waynesboro, VA.
Pallbearers will be Jason Harold, Curtis Eberly, Glenn Adkinson, Colton Adkinson, Aaron Owen, and Anthony Brewer.
