Harold Lowell Alderfer

December 13, 1946 - March 11, 2025

Harold Lowell Alderfer, 78, of Dayton, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at Bridgewater Retirement Community.

He was born on December 13, 1946 and was a son of the late Franklin Freed and Hilda (Moyer) Alderfer.

Harold was united in marriage on September 9, 1972 to Elaine Erb Alderfer who preceded him in death on December 6, 2017.

Harold developed a passion for farming at a young age, and with his wife Elaine, operated a dairy farm for many years. After retirement from farming, his interest and talent in tractor repair provided a second career. He was an avid collector of all things John Deere. He was best known for his outgoing spirit, unforgettable personality and extraordinary gift of making friends wherever he went. He will be missed by many in all the communities he was a part of.

Harold is survived by son, Jason (Kirsten Beachy) Alderfer, of Dayton; sisters, Dorcas (Wallace) Schaefer of Cumberland, Va., and Kathryn (Nelson) Baer of Newport News; two grandchildren, Sallie and Irene Alderfer; and was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brother, Richard Alderfer and sisters, Sarah Weaver and Myrna Alderfer.

The family will receive friends between 5:30PM - 7:30PM, on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at Johnson Funeral and Cremation Service in Bridgewater.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Powhatan Mennonite Church with Pastor Roy Hange officiating. Burial will follow at Powhatan Mennonite Church. Family and friends may visit one hour prior to the funeral service.
