Gennivee Shelton (Dennison) Carey

Gennivee Shelton (Dennison) Carey, 100, widow of Howard Maitland Carey, Jr., of Staunton, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 at The Legacy at North Augusta in Staunton. 
Mrs. Carey was born in Staunton, Virginia on July 10, 1925, daughter of the late Walter Elliot Bruce Dennison and Vernie (McCrory) Dennison. 
Gennivee graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1944 and later attended Dunsmore Business School. She devoted 12 years of service to the Augusta County School Board of Supervisors’ Office. A faithful member of Second Presbyterian Church for 98 years, Mrs. Carey served in various capacities.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Carey was preceded in death by two brothers, John Bradford Dennison and Boyd Emory Dennison. 
Surviving, is a son, William Bradford “Brad” Carey and his wife, Terry of Staunton; a step daughter, Samantha and her children, Brianna, Abby and Jayden; two nieces, Susan Lenderman and her husband, Chuck and Scottie Dennison; and a nephew, John Dennison and his wife, Joyce. 
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at Oaklawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens by Rev. Evan Smith.
The family will receive friends following the service at Second Presbyterian Church and other times at their residence, 1197 Spaulding Street, Staunton.

Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
