Franklin Monroe Wonderley
Franklin Monroe Wonderley, 94, of Grottoes, Virginia passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at his home.
He was born on September 28, 1930 as the fourth and youngest child of Alden Wonderley and Florence (Scott) Wonderley.
Franklin lived his entire life on Leroy Road outside Grottoes. He built his home himself 70 years ago, which included digging the basement with a team of horses; he lived in that house the remainder of his life. Franklin worked as a farmer his entire life and served in many leadership positions at the Port Republic United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing softball and bowling, then in his later years dining out at favorite establishments and attending local social gatherings. He was always known for his kindness and smile.
Franklin was united in marriage three times and cared for each wife until their passing. Given (Huffman) Wonderley, Rubye (Hoover) Wonderley, and Jo Anne (Thurber) Wonderley all preceded him in death.
Franklin is survived by a daughter, Pamela Sponaugle, of Grottoes; four grandchildren, Sarah (Jeff) Ward, Laura (J.T.) Begoon, Lissie (Tommy) Van Leunen, Ley Willis (John Huggins); six great grandchildren, Eli Ward, Ian Ward, Jack Begoon, Kinley Begoon, Brooklyn Begoon, Blake Begoon; one step-grandson, David Willis; close friend and caregiver, Cathy Thompson; and his beloved dog, Charlie.
In addition to his spouses and parents, Franklin was preceded in death by daughter, Karen Willis and husband Bob; son-in-law, John Sponaugle; one brother and two sisters.
The family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Thursday, October 24, 2024 at Johnson Funeral and Cremation Service in Grottoes.
A funeral service celebrating Franklin's life will be held on Friday October 25, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Port Republic Riverside Church (former Methodist church) with Pastor Steve Saufley officiating. Burial will follow at Port Republic Mutual Cemetery.
