Eleanor Holsinger

April 1, 1937 - October 30, 2025

Eleanor “Jane” Holsinger, age 88 and of Strasburg, passed away Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the Maynard.

Jane was born April 1, 1937, in the Clary community in Shenandoah County just outside of Strasburg, VA. A daughter of the late Katherine and James Mowery, Sr., she was the last surviving of their 8 children. She was a graduate of Strasburg High School and a life-long member of Walnut Springs Christian Church where she was a member of the Loyal Daughters Sunday School Class, a Deaconess (serving communion at a time when women didn’t yet serve on the board of Deacons), and later as a Deacon. She served on the Oranda Schoolhouse Committee and volunteered at yard parties, Homecomings, annual Bible School and Christmas programs, and fundraisers. Over the years, Jane worked for Farm Bureau, Shenandoah Animal Hospital, and Southern States where she was employed upon her retirement. She had great respect for local farmers and the farming community. She also worked every day, for 50 years, in her home office as Bookkeeper for the family business, Holsinger Brother’s Exxon (now the Strasburg Service Center).

Jane was a historian at heart. Officially, she served as Historian for Walnut Springs Christian Church but was also historian for her family. She always had her camera in hand, capturing not only special events but also daily life and memories as they were being made. She recorded dates and information on everyone and everything, even the daily weather.

Jane was known for her work ethic and determination and was never idle. She loved nature and was a nurturer. Outdoors was her favorite place to be, gardening then canning all she’d grown, tending to her yard and flower beds, feeding the birds, and caring for her cats and any living thing that came onto her property. She was just as happy in her kitchen and was an excellent cook. Nothing made her happier than having her family around her dinner table, especially on Sundays.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, James Mowery, Jr., Mary “Sis”

Mowery, Clarence “Bill” Mowery, Glenn “Bush” Mowery, Virginia Stevens, Ronald Mowery, and Gary

Mowery, her husband, Marshall Eugene “Gene” Holsinger and daughter-in-law Linda Gail Holsinger.

She is survived by her son, Michael Eugene Holsinger, one grandson, Mark Roller, his wife Mandy and sons Satchel, Will and Ryan. She is also survived by her beloved niece, Melissa Mowery Youngblood and her husband Jim and children Jack and Natalie.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00a.m. on Friday, November 7th, 2025, at Panorama Memorial

Gardens with the Rev. Wendell Schurtz officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Greg Holsinger, Glenn Keller, Jim Youngblood, Jack Youngblood, Natalie Youngblood, Satchel Roller, Will Roller and Ryan Roller.

Memorials may be made to Walnut Springs Christian Church c/o Rhonda Sager, 311 Hidden Lane, Strasburg, VA 22657.
