Dorothy Ruth (Campbell) Fitzgerald
Dorothy Ruth (Campbell) Fitzgerald or “Dot” passed away peacefully at the age of 96 at her home in Waynesboro, Virginia on October 1, 2024. Dot was surrounded by her beloved family as she joined her late husband Marshall G Fitzgerald and daughter Debra Ann Fitzgerald in their eternal home.
Dorothy was born August 6, 1928 in Augusta County Virginia but raised in Oak Hill, WVA by her mother Ruth V Campbell and father Charles M Campbell. Dot came to Virginia to babysit her sister’s son where she eventually met her husband Marshall Fitzgerald. They soon got married in April of 1953 and bought their forever home in Waynesboro, Va which would hold family gatherings for years to come. After retiring from Morton Frozen Food/Conagra, Dot devoted her time to taking care of her grandchildren and became an influential part of their lives. Dorothy went to church every Sunday and always had to go to bingo after. Dot’s favorite thing to collect was salt and pepper shakers and her family always got her more even though they knew she didn’t need them.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her sisters Margaret Henderson, Mary Dorton, Bea Dameron, Virginia Watkins, brother Frank Campbell and son in law Larry Hyden. Surviving is brother Charles Campbell, daughters Linda Hyden, Teresa Dinges and husband Donnie, and Marsha Pennington, grandchildren Jennifer Campbell and husband Ryan, Emily Rowzie and husband Josh, Vanessa Pennington, great grandkids include Hunter Campbell, Zaydee Campbell, Paisley Rowzie, and Kendall Rowzie.
Honorary pallbearers Donnie Dinges, Ryan Campbell, Josh Rowzie, Hunter Campbell, Buzzy Walters, and Bobby Small.
We’ll miss her smart-alec comments, fiery and witty attitude, but most of all we will miss her love for those around her and her love for life.
Family will receive friends from 5-7pm on Thursday, October 3rd at Mcdow Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 11am Friday, October 4th at McDow and a separate burial will be on October 10th at 11am at Augusta Memorial Park.
