Doris (Hopkins) Moore Armstrong

July 21, 1934 - March 1, 2026

Doris (Hopkins) Moore Armstrong, 91, widow of Franklin L. Armstrong, of Staunton, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 1, 2026 at her residence.
Mrs. Armstrong was born in Roanoke County, Virginia on July 21, 1934, a daughter of the late Charlie Lee Hopkins and Louella (Simmons) Hopkins.
Doris graduated from high school in Salem, Virginia, and completed her X-ray training at Jefferson Hospital in Roanoke. She began her career at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington, Virginia, and later served as Supervisor of the Radiology Department at Western State Hospital, where she faithfully worked until her retirement.
Mrs. Armstrong was a devoted and faithful member of Memorial Baptist Church in Staunton. She loved her church family and especially enjoyed attending the Joy Sunday School Class. Throughout the years, she served in many capacities, including greeter and library assistant. Her Sunday School class began the meaningful tradition of preparing meals for funeral services, a ministry that reflected Doris’s caring and servant’s heart. She found great joy in reading her Bible, attending Bible studies, and participating in WMU (a women’s missionary group).
Doris had a generous heart and a beautiful smile that could brighten any room. A woman of many talents, she found joy in traveling, tending to her garden, and sharing her many gifts with those around her. Her kindness, warmth, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Armstrong was preceded in death by her first husband, Lloyd J. Moore; a sister, Janet Abshire; and two brothers-in-law, John Abshire and Harold G. Ramsuer.
Surviving is a daughter, Deborah M. Walker of Staunton and her companion, Roderick Clark; a sister, Mary H. Ramsuer of Roanoke; a step-granddaughter, Tonya Williams and her son, Jones of Richmond; a nephew, Darryl Abshire and his wife, Renee of Boones Mill, VA; a niece, Linda Cruff and her husband, Danny of Roanoke; many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; a cousin, Pat Wheeler of Lynchburg; and a long-time friend, Patsy Morris of Greenville.
Mrs. Armstrong is also survived by members of her chosen family, Scott, Tara, Peyton, Grace, and Joey Edwards of Richmond; JoeAnn and Lyn Day of Staunton; Rick and Wendy Ramsuer of Roanoke; Gerald, Cindy, and MaryBeth Killian of Roanoke; Brenda Miller of Verona; Betty Hammer and family of Staunton; and Stephen Ritchie of IN. Additionally, she was a special Grammie to Keira and Alexa Folsom of AL.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2026 in Thornrose Cemetery (1041 West Beverley Street, Staunton) by Pastor Todd Latham.
A celebration of life will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Baptist Church.
Active pallbearers will be Scott Edwards, Joey Edwards, Jones Williams, Rick Ramsuer, Gerald Killian, and Stephen Ritchie.
