David Solomon
David Ellis Solomon, a devoted husband, loving father, beloved grandfather, and cherished music educator, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2025, at the age of 85. His was a remarkable, life well-lived and well-loved, defined by an enduring marriage, a passion for teaching, and a deep well of kindness.
Born in Suffolk, Virginia, David was the only child of Richard and Mary Solomon. He developed his early love for creativity and community playing in the happy chaos of the local bakery, where his mother decorated cakes. That delightful foundation followed him throughout his life, particularly into his career.
David was a lifelong music educator, dedicating decades to inspiring minds young and old with the power and joy of music. Whether he was leading a high school band, directing the church choir, leading the tone chimes, or just helping a student find their way in the world, his infectious enthusiasm left an indelible mark on his community and thousands of students.
His greatest joy and achievement was his magnificent partnership with his beloved wife, Marilyn, whom he cherished for 63 wonderful years. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, adventure, and unwavering support for one another. Their love was a beautiful, inspiring sight to all who knew them.
A devoted family man, David's legacy lives on. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, his daughter, Becky, and her husband, Bill. He was undeniably the proud and doting grandfather—or "Papa"—to his grandson, Colin, who will carry on David's spirited nature and never-met-a-stranger personality.
David’s kindness, warmth, and wonderful sense of humor will be profoundly missed, but the immense love and the beautiful music he brought to the world will continue to be a comfort to his family.
A celebration of David’s life will be held at Virginia Hills Church in Front Royal, Virginia, on Saturday, November 15, at 11:00 AM, with lunch to follow. The family invites all friends, former students, musicians, and makers of joyful noise to join in this celebration.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests you honor David’s memory by supporting the musical arts through your attendance, volunteerism, or financial donation.
"As long as the human spirit thrives on this planet, music in some living form will accompany and sustain it." — Aaron Copland
