Conrad Mayo Guthrie

February 25, 1934 - October 21, 2024

Conrad Mayo Guthrie, 90, a resident of Waynesboro, passed away October 21, 2024 at his residence.

He was born February 25, 1934, a son of the late Kent Fontaine Guthrie and Lottie May Guthrie.

He grew up in a loving family, receiving an abundance of encouragement and support from his parents and siblings. He enjoyed working with young people and seeing them learn and grow.

Mr. Guthrie was a member of First Baptist Church in Waynesboro where he served as a deacon and was on several other committees. He was also a member of the Faith Sunday School class.

He was a graduate of the College of William and Mary where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha and served as its President. He also earned a Masters Degree of Education from the University of Virginia.

He was a veteran and served with the United States Army in Germany.

Following military service, he began work with the National Security Agency in Washington D.C. He later worked at VDOT and then entered the field of education as a teacher of mathematics. His teaching career included work in the Staunton school system, the Nova Scotia Summer School for Teachers in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and ended with twenty-five years at Waynesboro High School. During several of those years at WHS, he served as the Mathematics Department Chair.

A long time sports enthusiast, he participated in high school athletics and later in life became a big fan of his favorite teams, especially those involving his grandchildren and his alma mater. He was a long time member of the Tribe Club.

His love of Big Band, show tunes, and classical music was a joy all his life. He also loved to read and travel, and in his younger years he took much pleasure in gardening.

In 2004, he was introduced into “The Olde Guarde” of William and Mary during his 50th class reunion.

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were his lovely wife of 45 years, Adeline Christian Guthrie; sister Judy Guthrie Davidson; brother Tom Guthrie; step-children Madeline Alexander, Roger Gayle Miller, and Ann Miller; and granddaughter Sandra Smith.

Surviving family members include his daughter, Judy Smith; grandchildren, Darrell Alexander (Stella), Jennifer Alexander, Donald Miller (Mary Peters), William Smith, Julie Miller, and Wendy Hunt; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Shirley Guthries.

Mr. Guthrie and his family wish to extend a special mention of gratitude to his wonderful caregivers who eased him through his later years: Judy Smith, Wendy Hunt, Daniel Hunt, Pam Yowell, Cindy Waggy, Dawn Phillips and Kathy Toms.

A Celebration of Mr. Guthrie’s life will be held Saturday, November 2,2024 at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church in Waynesboro, officiated by Rev. Justin Moser and Donald Miller. The family will receive friends following the service.
