Charles Mervin Newman

Charles Mervin Newman, 90, a longtime resident of Waynesboro, VA, went to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at Augusta Health.

A son of the late Charlie Brown Newman and Thelma (Morris) Newman, he was born September 12, 1934 in Crozet, Virginia.

He was a 1952 graduate of Waynesboro High School, and Owner/Operator of Sullivan Floor and Tile.

Mr. Newman was a very active member of Second Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder, Sunday School teacher since he was in his 20s, and singing in the choir for 70 years. 

Throughout his life, he truly never met a stranger.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Marie (Sullivan) Newman; daughter, Sandra Darlene Newman; sister, Shirley N. Bragg; step-mother, Bessie Newman; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Faye Sullivan and Phyllis Arlene Terrell.

Surviving are his sons, Charles Mervin “Chuck” Newman and his wife Susie, and William Patrick “Bill” Newman and his wife Ginny, both of Waynesboro; daughter, June Newman of Fishersville; 9 grandchildren, Josh Vargas, Jesse Skillman, Elizabeth Skillman, John Stevens, C.J. Brown, Christopher Hilldrup, Daniel Newman, Megan Newman Neal, and Aaron Newman; 9 great-grandchildren; brother, James V. Newman and wife Carolyn of Waynesboro; sisters, Jean N. Droughman of Waynesboro, Sally N. Raines of Waynesboro, and Saundra Frazier of Virginia Beach; and a special cousin, Jack “Frosty” Newman of Texas.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Monday, September 30, 2024 at McDow Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday October 1, 2024 in Second Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. Dr. Amy Fetterman. Interment will follow in Augusta Memorial Park.
