Carol Susan Macdonald

October 30, 1953 - October 19, 2025

Carol Susan MacDonald of Staunton, VA, died peacefully at home, entering everlasting life, on October 19th, 2025, just shy of her 72nd birthday. Carol was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on October 30, 1953, daughter of the late Duncan Sinclair MacDonald and the late Doris (Miller) MacDonald-Hoyle. She was the long-time companion of Clint Edwards, who passed from this life in January 2025.
Raised in Pawtucket, Carol graduated from Pawtucket West High School, Class of 1971. After high school, she worked for many years at Rowe Vending Company in Pawtucket as the Accounts Receivable specialist.
Carol had a vibrant personality, delighting in life’s simple pleasures like melted cheese and coffee milk. An avid Scrabble player, she used her uncanny knack for numbers and strategy to outsmart opponents, expertly placing letters to earn triple letters and double words, often securing an insurmountable score. Her family fondly remembers her triumphant smile when she played a seven-letter word, leaving her opponents (her brother mostly) in awe.
In the late 1980s, she relocated near her sister in Livermore Falls, Maine, where she worked for many years in the administration office of MSAD 52. Later, Carol embarked on another adventure, relocating to Elkton, Virginia, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. She found the area peaceful, beautiful, and welcoming. There, she worked at IDM Trucking as an Accounting Clerk and Night Dispatcher for over 20 years until her retirement in 2015. She cherished her dispatching role and the camaraderie with the truckers. After retiring, Carol embraced new adventures, traveling with friends to her home state of Rhode Island, Maine, Pigeon Forge, Myrtle Beach, and Las Vegas, creating cherished memories.
Above all, Carol’s greatest joy and pride was becoming a grandmother to her three grandchildren, Robbie, Sammy, and Aaron. Robbie tragically died in 1998, a heartache that never left her. She honored Robbie’s memory by passionately supporting Kids and Cars, an organization dedicated to saving children and pets through education on safe practices in and around vehicles. Her advocacy reflected her deep love for her family and community.
In addition to her parents, companion Clint Edwards, and grandson Robbie, Carol was predeceased by her beloved sister, Joyce (MacDonald) Blackman, in August 2025.
She is survived by her son, Scott MacDonald, and his wife, Vicki, of Stratton, ME; her grandsons, Sam and Aaron; her brother, Theodore “Ted” MacDonald, and his wife, Shirley, of Smithfield, RI; as well as several nieces and a nephew.
To honor Carol’s life, a Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Carol and her grandson, Robbie MacDonald, may be made to the Kids and Cars Organization at 2208 S Halley Ct., Olathe, KS 66062, or at kidsandcars.org.
Carol’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
