Carey Grenfell Rickabaugh
Carey Grenfell Rickabaugh, 87, husband of Glenda Louise (Luttrell) Rickabaugh, of Heather Lane, Staunton, passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2023 at the King’s Daughters Community Health & Rehabilitation Center in Staunton.
Mr. Rickabaugh was born on August 14, 1936 in Delaware, a son of the late Rev. Clyde Edward and Viola Isabel (Mitchell) Rickabaugh.
Carey, or "Rick", as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, attended Grove City College, PA, Western Maryland College MD, and Case Western Reserve, OH. He received his PhD in Political Science from University of Maryland in 1968. During his career Rick taught at Oklahoma State University, Bradley University, and then at Rhode Island College, where he went on to teach for thirty-eight years as a Professor of Political Science.
While raising his family, Rick and his wife Glenda enjoyed beach outings, camping, visits to historical sites, and yearly trips across New England to see the fall foliage. In his retirement years, he found great pleasure in reading and traveling throughout the US, Europe, and beyond. In 2009, he relocated to Staunton, Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley and spent the winter months near his grandchildren in Sunrise, Florida. Family was always of great significance to Rick, and created many wonderful memories with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Rickabaugh was preceded in death by two brothers, Ramon Rickabaugh and Homer Rickabaugh; and a sister, Doris Cinque.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 63 years is sister Janet White, three children, June Lynne Daley Schmidt (husband David Schmidt), Pamela Rickabaugh (fiancé Scott Chandler), and Randy Rickabaugh. He was also survived by five grandchildren Katherine Daley Wehking, Alexander Daley, Sarah Daley Jones, Chris Daley, and Susanna Daley and great-grandchildren Hailey and Hudson Wehking and Morgan Daley.
A Celebration of life will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2024 in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. William “Bill” Trice.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park.

Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
