Brenda Louise (Vanfossen) Smiley

October 2, 1947 - February 25, 2026

Brenda Louise (VanFossen) Smiley, 78, wife of Fred Allen Smiley, of Staunton, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at her residence. 
Mrs. Smiley was born in Waynesboro, Virginia on October 2, 1947, a daughter of the late Elmer Kenneth VanFossen and Janie Marie (Jordan) VanFossen.
Brenda was a devoted member of Hebron Presbyterian Church and worked for many years as a self-employed cosmetologist. A proud 1967 graduate of Riverheads High School, she carried a strong work ethic and caring spirit throughout her life. Brenda found her greatest joy in spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved tending to her flower gardens and watching hummingbirds, taking special pleasure in the simple beauty of nature.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smiley was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Foxx and her husband, Junior; and an infant sister, Gloria Jean VanFossen. 
Surviving, in addition to her husband of 58 years, are two sons, Daniel A. Smiley and his wife, Kelly and David W. Smiley and his wife, Billie Jo all of Staunton; a sister, Nancy (VanFossen) Thomas and her husband, Lane of Stuarts Draft; a brother-in-law, Jim Smiley; two sisters-in-law, Mae Carpenter and Salina Smiley; five grandchildren, Austin Smiley and his wife, Taylor, Cole Smiley and his wife, Logan, Shelby Cogar and her husband, Davis, Zac Smiley, and Noah Smiley and his fiancé, Rhea Bendel; four great- grandchildren, Beau Smiley, Graham Smiley, Brooks Cogar and Kayce Cogar; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory. 
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2026 in the Hebron Presbyterian Church Cemetery by Rev. Dr. Henry Scoggins.
Active pallbearers will be Austin Smiley, Cole Smiley, Zac Smiley, Noah Smiley, and Davis Cogar.
