Beryl "B.J." Jean Payne

Beryl Jean "B.J." Payne, 80, of New Market, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

B.J. was born in Maryland on November 4, 1945 and was a daughter of the late Arnett McVene and Velma Grace (Caplinger) May.

She was united in marriage to Robbie Payne who survives.

For the majority of her life, B.J. was a waitress. Serving at such places as the Thomas House in Dayton and Woody's Restaurant in Bridgewater. She was a devoted member of the Harrisonburg Seventh Day Adventist Church and loved teaching the children in her bible school class.

B.J. made fond memories camping with her family and friends, tending to her garden, and surrounding herself with the most beautiful flowers. Her caring nature gave her a deep love for animals, especially cats.

In addition to her husband, B.J. is also survived by children, Kevin (Cathy) Hawse, Cynthia (Mike) Smith, Darla (Bill Shreve) Hoover, DeAnne (Jeff) Parker; siblings, Teresa (Paul) Arey and Ronald (Carolyn) May, Sr.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Arnett McVene "Mick" May, Jr.

A service celebrating her life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at Harrisonburg Seventh Day Adventist Church with Elder Tim Conley officiating.
