Barbara Kay (Coffey) Shaner, 76, of Staunton, passed away peacefully at Augusta Health on March 24, 2025 around 2 A.M., surrounded by her family.

Born at Kings Daughter Hospital in Staunton to Rudolph and Ruby Coffey, Barbara spent her life bringing joy to others. She graduated from Riverheads High School, Class of 1968. She served as a crossing guard for the Staunton Police Department for several years while her children were young. Many in the community fondly remember her warm smile while she served up ice cream at the Big Dipper in the Staunton Mall for many years. Later, she continued to brighten people’s days as a cashier at the Staunton Kroger. For several years, she catered events for the Colonial District of the American Rose Society, showcasing her talent and love for hospitality.

Family was at the heart of Barbara’s life. She and her beloved husband, Charles Lynn Shaner, shared 57 beautiful years together. She was a loving mother to Victoria Lynn Stevens (husband, J.B.), Keith Allen Shaner (wife, Kaye), and Corey Douglas Shaner. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren: Matthew Fitzgerald (wife, Heather), Katie Miller (fiancé, Josh), Dean Shaner, Hailey Chittum, John Shaner (Gracie), and Christopher Fitzgerald (Meah), and her cherished great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Hedley Coffey and David Coffey, and her dear friend Debbie Morris.

Barbara was preceded in death by her brother Wilson Coffey; her sisters Audrey Garber (husband, John) and Maxine Ford (husband, Jack); her nieces, Dana and Denise; and many other loved ones.

Barbara’s faith was an essential part of her life. She was a devoted member of Christ Lutheran Church of Staunton, where she found joy singing in the choir. She was also an active member of the Fellowship and Hospitality Committee, always lending a helping hand and sharing her warmth with others. Her presence in the church community will be deeply missed.

A celebration of life will be held atChrist Lutheran Church, 2807 N. Augusta St., Staunton, VA 24401on March 29, 2025 at 11 A.M followed by a luncheon in the fellowship hall.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Augusta Health, Rivers Edge, and Dr. Marsh for their exceptional care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 2807 N. Augusta St., Staunton, VA 24401, in Barbara’s honor.

Barbara’s light will continue to shine through the countless lives she touched. Her memory will forever be a blessing.
