Barbara L. Hicks

Barbara L. Hicks, 84, of Grottoes, passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at the Life Care Center of New Market.

She was born on August 9, 1940 and was a daughter of the late Jeremy and Erma (Wonderly) Lipscomb.

Barbara had worked as a public health nurse and nursing home inspector for the state of Virginia for 35 years. Following her retirement she worked in quality assurance for the nursing home industry for over a decade. She was an active member of Grottoes United Methodist Church, where she was a past president of the United Methodist Women and a valued member of the Knitting circle. She was an avid reader and loved spending time on the eastern shore.

Barbara was united in marriage on June 19, 1965 to Robert Paul "Bud" Hicks who preceded her in death on November 22, 2017.

Barbara is survived by her children, Ellen Hicks and Robert (Elizabeth) Hicks, II,; a brother, Robert Lipscomb; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Lipscomb.

A service celebrating Barbara's life will be held on Friday, October 11, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Grottoes United Methodist Church with Pastors Eric Strother and Lori Valentine officiating. Burial will follow at Edgewood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 10, 2024 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Johnson Funeral & Cremation Service in Grottoes.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grottoes United Methodist Church or the RMH Foundation, the Twila Showalter Fund.
