Nancy S. Myers
Nancy Gale Swindler Myers, 91, died on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Born on March 13, 1935, in Washington, DC, Nancy lived a life shaped by learning, service, and steady devotion to her family and community. She attended the city’s public schools and continued her education, earning a B.A. in Foreign Relations at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, and later a master’s degree in psychology from James Madison University. She was married to Dr. Henry Allen Cochran Myers, a professor of history and political science, from September 1956 until his death in 2014. They were married in Stuttgart, Germany and both served briefly with the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps, returning to the US after the birth of their first child, Terry, in 1958. Nancy served as a school psychologist with Augusta County Public Schools from 1975 to 2000. Her professional life reflected the same qualities noted by those who knew her: she cared deeply for children, was well-read, resilient, gracious, and intellectually curious. Nancy’s surviving family includes her children, Dr. Theresa Myers Andrews (Timothy F. Andrews) of Naivasha, Kenya; Daniel C. Myers of Churchville, Virginia; Lisa M. Myers, Esq. (Michael P. Allen) of Silver Spring, Maryland; and Allen C. Myers, Esq. (Dr. Neely L. Myers) of Dallas, Texas. Her family also includes her grandchildren, Joseph Andrews (Dinty Andrews) of Playa del Rey, California; Richard Andrews of Raleigh, North Carolina; Teddy Allen-Myers, Nicholas Allen-Myers, and Carly Allen-Myers of Silver Spring, Maryland; and Lilliana Myers and Madalyn Myers of Dallas, Texas, as well as Nancy’s numerous nieces, nephews, and their spouses and children. Nancy had a keen interest in art, for a time teaching college-level art history courses. She also enjoyed classical music, nature, and travel. She toured US National Parks, Africa, Russia, China, and destinations throughout Europe; she spent time living in Germany and Austria. With her spouse and extended family, she helped to establish a continuing tradition that has endured for over 50 years – gathering annually on North Carolina’s beautiful Outer Banks beaches for a week or more of sunshine, recreation, and fellowship. She enjoyed extensive reading, Scrabble, and Bridge - pursuits well suited to her thoughtful mind and active intellect. Nancy was a faithful member of Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church in Fishersville, where for many years she led the adult Sunday School section, known for its vibrant discussions and robust congregant engagement. A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church in Fishersville. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 2:00 PM. Interment will directly follow in the church cemetery, with a reception in the church’s social hall to follow. Nancy fostered a love of learning and enjoyed reading to her children and grandchildren; she also served as a volunteer reader to children at her local library. Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of the Augusta County Library Foundation (1759 Jefferson Highway Fishersville, VA 22939). Nancy Gale Swindler Myers will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude for a life of learning, work, and family.
