James Hamilton Mullenax, 83, of Staunton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at his residence. He was born in Staunton, a son of the late Carl William, Sr. and Katherine Pauline Lightner Mullenax. He devoted much of his life to serving his community. He was a member of the Staunton Volunteer Fire Company for more than forty years during its years as a volunteer organization and formerly served as its treasurer. He was also a longtime member of the Staunton-Augusta Jaycees, where he served for a time as chaplain. Professionally, Jim was employed by Hershey Chocolate of Virginia in Stuarts Draft, where he worked in security for twenty years. In his spare time, James was an avid reader who thoroughly enjoyed working on his model trains. Known for his sense of humor, he loved telling jokes and bringing laughter to those around him. Jim proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Navy and was a devoted member of Central United Methodist Church in Staunton. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Beth Wayland Stanley Mullenax; his daughter, Sheryl Ann Mullenax and her fiancé, Tony Reid; his grandchildren, Barbara Darlene Reid (Josh Taylor), Lily Mae Reid, and Wyatt Bryce Fields; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Carl William Mullenax, Jr. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Henry Funeral Home in Staunton with the Reverend Won Un officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment in Green Hill Cemetery in Churchville will be private. The family would like to especially thank to Amedisys Home Health Care for all the compassion, care, and attention given to Jim during this time.
