Dorothy Marie (Tutwiler) Chaplin

Dorothy Marie (Tutwiler) Chaplin, 101, of Bridgewater, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at the Bridgewater Retirement Community.

She was born on January 14, 1925 and was a daughter of the late Otis and Lillian (Bauserman) Tutwiler. Marie was one of four sisters and grew up in Mt. Crawford.

Following graduation from Bridgewater High School, Marie worked at the Maritime Commission and attended Strayer Business College in Washington DC. Upon returning to the area, she married, raised a family, and established a career as a loan officer at First Virginia Bank until retiring in 1980. Later, she enjoyed working at the Dry Cleaners in Bridgewater while pursuing many travel adventures and keeping up her avid card playing. Marie was also a faithful member of the Bridgewater United Methodist Church.

On February 9, 1944, Marie was united in marriage to James Edward Chaplin, who preceded her in death on July 22, 1978.

She is survived by two daughters, Kathy Suter (Perry) and Nancy Showalter (JB); seven grandchildren: Angela Osinkosky (Jon), Richard Wenger, Lee Shirkey (Michelle), Aaron Shirkey (Jennifer), Theresa Showalter, Russell Showalter (Jayme), and Ryan Miracle (Molly); sixteen great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Marie was preceded in death by her daughter, Jo Ellen Wenger; three sisters: Edith Kincheloe, Lavan Linhoss, and Ruth Harris; and one grandchild: Susan Wenger.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 22, 2026 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Johnson Funeral & Cremation Service in Bridgewater. The casket will be closed.

A service celebrating Marie's life will be held on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at 3:00 PM at Johnson Funeral & Cremation Service Chapel in Bridgewater with Pastor Steve Bird officiating. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a local charity or organization of your choice.
