Maria Elizabeth Talley-Atkins

September 27, 1955 - June 27, 2026

Maria Elizabeth Talley-Atkins, 70, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at her residence in Staunton.

She was born on September 27, 1955, in Staunton to the late Chester Winston, Jr. and Louise Charlotte Bricca Talley.

Maria pursued her education at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, and James Madison University in Harrisonburg. Her passion for science led her to a career as a biochemist for the Commonwealth of Virginia, where she worked for twenty years.

Outside of her professional life, Maria loved hiking and taking long scenic drives with her husband, Daniel, creating memories together along the way. One of the accomplishments she was most proud of was the decision she and Daniel made to quit smoking and drinking together so they could embrace a healthier lifestyle and enjoy many more years together.

More than any achievement, Maria will be remembered for the kindness she shared with everyone she met. She treated others with dignity, respect, and genuine compassion. She was the kind of person who never hesitated to reach out with a phone call to make sure someone else was doing okay. Her caring heart, thoughtful spirit, and unwavering concern for others left a lasting impression on countless lives.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel Solon Atkins; her son, Jake Solon Atkins (Cat); her daughters, Melissa Lynne Steele Burwell and Sarah Danielle Atkins; her brother, Clifton Thomas Talley; her sister, Colette Karen Talley Thomas; and her granddaughters, Natalie and Kate Burwell.

Henry Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
