Nancy Foster
STAUNTON – Kathryne Lillian “Nancy” (Saunders) Foster, 95, formerly of Waynesboro, passed away Sunday (April 26, 2026) in Brookdale Staunton.
Nancy was born in Lennig, Halifax County on December 18, 1930 and was one of eight children born to Edward Isaac and Estelle Eliza (Overstreet) Saunders. She graduated from Volens High School and earned a secretarial certificate from Virginia Commercial School of Business. Nancy was employed by Virginia Power/Dominion Energy as a confidential secretary, retiring after 30 years of service. In her devotion to her work and to her co-workers, she assisted many still-grateful Dominion employees in making wise financial plans for their futures.
Nancy absolutely loved church life. She was very active in Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church from 1969 until her health declined. Outside of work and church activities, she was a dedicated vegetable gardener and thus an accomplished home-canner for many decades. She was also gifted in creating artistic floral arrangements, and enjoyed using this talent for the benefit of others. Later in life, she grew to appreciate trips to the beach – particularly Nags Head - with family and friends. Above all, Nancy was family oriented; she passionately loved those she called her own, and was deeply loved by them in return.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, James Clayton “J.C.” Foster, Jr.; two sisters, Alice Saunders and Mabel Hudson; and four brothers, Pat, Luke, Jimmy and John Saunders.
Surviving are two sons, James C. “Jim” Foster III (wife Sherry) of Lyndhurst, and Daniel S. Foster Sr. (wife Ann) of Hightown; sister Jean Farmer (husband Johnny) of Chase City; brother-in-law Harold Neal of Bedford; grandchildren Scott Foster (wife Liz), Mariam Lightner (husband Corey), Amanda Walker (husband Beau), Jimmy Foster (wife Claire), and Amy Jurls (husband Darby); great-grandchildren Helen Kathryne Foster, Colton Lightner, Caston Lightner, Ann Carter Walker, Mary Foster Walker, Julia Diamond, Rachel Diamond, Cora Foster, Jake Foster, Ian Foster, Asher Jurls, Jonah Jurls and Silas Jurls; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 in Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, officiated by the Rev. Brint Keyes. The services will conclude with burial in the church cemetery. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
Bear Funeral Home is serving the family. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.bearfuneralhome.com.
