Jeanette Virginia (Peabody) Hitechew
Jeanette Virginia (Peabody) Hitechew, 78, wife of Harry F. Hitechew, Jr. of Staunton, and formerly of Walkers Creek, passed away quietly surrounded by her family and friends, on Monday, March 23, 2026.
Mrs. Hitechew was born in Richmond, Virginia on May 19, 1947, a daughter of the late Frederick Francis Peabody, Jr., and Pauline (Hamilton) Peabody.
Jeanette was a retired real estate agent who found genuine joy in connecting with people and building lasting relationships. She had a gift for listening, and often brought home heartfelt stories shared by those she served.
Deeply committed to her community, Mrs. Hitechew volunteered her time at the Middlebrook Library, where her kindness and welcoming spirit touched many. She was also a devoted advocate for animals in need, working tirelessly to help them find safe, loving homes and offering them care and comfort along the way. In addition to her service locally, Jeanette and her husband volunteered at Joy to the Children in Fernandina Beach, Florida during the holidays.
Jeanette found peace and happiness in life’s simple pleasures. She was an avid gardener who took pride in nurturing beauty from the earth, and a devoted cat lover whose home—and heart—were always open to her feline companions. Her gentle spirit, generosity, and love for both people and animals will be remembered by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hitechew was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Wendy Rene; and a granddaughter, Alexandra.
Surviving, in addition to her husband of 61 years, is a daughter, Kimberly Lynn and her husband, Russ of Richmond and her children, Stephen, Nicholas, Travis, John, and Mark; Wendy’s children, Isabelle and Russell; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Becky Martin and her husband, Donald of Richmond; and a number nieces of nephews.
Services will be private.
It is suggested that those desiring make memorial contributions to Caring for Creatures (352 Sanctuary Lane, Palmyra, VA 22963) or your local SPCA.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
