Elizabeth Alice (Michulka) Hicks
Elizabeth Alice (Michulka) Hicks, 80, widow of John Wade Hicks, of Staunton, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2026 at Augusta Health in Fishersville.
Mrs. Hicks was born in East Bernard, Texas on March 28, 1945, a daughter of the late Steven Paul Michulka and Frances Martha (Kumaga) Michulka.
Elizabeth retired from the City of Staunton where she was employed at City Hall as a custodian for 17 years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In addition to being an amazing mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she was a person who had charity – the pure love of Christ in her heart and shared this love, concern and caring with others, always looking for an opportunity to help and serve others. She had a deep faith in Jesus Christ and her Heavenly Father and attended church on Sundays.
She had a curious spirit and so she spent her life educating herself; learning from books, online classes, and trying out new things such as carpentry, home repairs, sewing, the basics of auto maintenance, and even studied real estate. She especially loved drawing, painting and art as she was very creative. She also loved music and learning how to play the guitar, piano, harmonica &ukulele. She took a course in writing children’s stories. She was a nature lover and could be found sitting outside on her bench in her flower garden singing while watching the birds. In her younger years she enjoyed going hiking, camping, fishing, swimming, and just out in nature. She once won a fishing tournament and received a trophy as she caught the biggest fish at Tams Lake in Gypsy Hill Park. She enjoyed reading, watching movies, playing bingo, shopping, going out to eat (especially Mexican & barbeque), going to museums, festivals, community events, going to church and spending time with her family. She had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel and would go on road trips to visit different states and see different sights. She loved animals! She took in all the feral cats in the neighborhood and fed them and loved telling stories about her past pets. She was very independent and insisted on living in her own home until her last day!
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Julie (Michulka) Vaughn and Katherine Teresa (Michulka) Nichols.
Surviving, are two daughters, Lisa Jeanne (Moses) Lowe and her husband, Michael of Jasper, AR and Mary “Jennifer” (Hicks) Plaugher of Staunton; two brothers, Raymond Steve Michulka and Thomas Bill Michulka both of Rosenburg, TX; eleven grandchildren, Robert Carnes, Leslie Wynn, Jessica Bell, Destiny Bell, Michael Lowe, Sara Kalvert, Taylor Lowe, Erin Lowe, Lydia Plaugher, Stephen Plaugher, and Abram Plaugher; and eighteen great-grandchildren.
