Geraldine Marie (Gheen) Fendley
Geraldine Marie Gheen Fendley, wife of Samuel Carl Fendley, 77, of Elkton, Va went home to be with Jesus on December 21, 2025, at her residence.
Mrs. Fendley was born on October 8, 1948, in Alexandria, Virginia, daughter of the late Rev. James Gheen and Mae Ruth Mcnabb Gheen.
Mrs. Fendley married her sweetheart, Samuel Carl Fendley of Dallas, Texas, 10 days after graduating from Osbourn High School in Manassas, Virginia. In addition to an evangelistic ministry across many states, they also pastored in Carlisle, PA, Strasburg, VA, Front Royal, VA, Mt. Olive, VA, and Hagerstown, MD., before retiring due to declining health and moving to live with her daughter and son-in-law in Weyer’s Cave, Virginia.
After their years of traveling to evangelize, Mrs. Fendley drove a school bus for Warren County Schools for 17 years. She also substituted in the school cafeterias, and volunteered to help in the office whenever she could. After raising her family she attended Lord Fairfax Community College and graduated 4.0 average. She worked a variety of other jobs later in life ranging from church secretary to hostessing. During her working career she received many awards, such as best bus driver of the month, and many more. However, the greatest reward she has ever received was hearing her Savior say, “Well done, my child!”
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald E. Gheen and Larry A. Gheen, brother-in-law William Howard Peregory, and sister-in-law Frances Schultz.
Surviving in addition to her husband are her three children, Dorinda Ruth Sponaugle of Elkton, Virginia, Trina Marie Miller and husband Ernie of Iberia, Missouri, and Samuel “Carl” Fendley Jr. and wife Hillary of Martinsburg, West Virginia; six grandchildren, Stephen Sponaugle II and wife Katelyn, of Shenandoah, VA, Samuel Sponaugle and his wife Hannah of Martinsburg, WV, Elizabeth Baker and husband Joshua of Iberia, MO, James Miller and wife Yesica, of Dixon, MO, Allison Hensell of Middleton, VA, and Jerry Tylor Fendley of Lexington, NC,;seven great-grandchildren Ezra, Isaiah, Lucas, Jayce, David, Grant, Isabella, and Madison.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at Stover Funeral Home, 177 N Holliday Street, Strasburg, VA 22657, by Pastor Brent Gabbard and Rev. Paul Markee. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service from 9:00 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Burial will follow at Panorama Memorial Gardens in Strasburg, VA.
Active pall bearers will be Stephen Sponaugle II, Samuel Sponaugle, Jimmy Miller, Daniel Peregory, Jimmi Gheen, and Bob Byers.
Honorary pall bearers will be Joseph Peregory, Joel Peregory, Tyrone Gheen, J.B. Gheen, and Eli Gheen.
