Margie Ann Mayes, 86, of Grottoes, passed away on Sunday, December 14, 2025.

She was born on July 29, 1939, and was a daughter of the late Jesse and Rosa Ella (Dean) Hammer.

Margie graduated from Blue Ridge College and Liberty University, was the first female mayor of Grottoes, served as the first female president of the Port Republic Ruritans, and retired from DuPont after 26 years of service. She later went on to work for Westat and RTI. She was a ICM chaplain for Friendship Ministries, a lifelong member of the Port Republic United Methodist Church, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She loved gardening, antiquing, traveling, visiting the beach, and watching her Redskins.

Margie was united in marriage to Ronald R. Mayes, who preceded her in death.

Margie is survived by four children, Ronald (Becky) Mayes, Jr., Valerie Mayes (Brad), Lorri Hensley (Steve), and Meneika Rogers (Ken); siblings, Wanda Comer, Larry Hammer, and Randy Hammer; twelve grandchildren, Josh Mayes, Aarika Skelly Malca, Devin Skelly Diehl, John Skelly, Lauren Hensley Shifflett, Holly Mayes Balice, Faith Mayes, Kara Hensley Monger, Tomi Hensley Preston, Christopher Rogers, Grace Rogers, and Michael Rogers; fourteen great-grandchildren, Kaiser Mayes, Ellie Mayes, Braxton Balice, Lily Malca, Eli Malca, Coleman Skelly, Lane Skelly, London Shifflett, Benton Shifflett, River Monger, Ridge Monger, Harper Preston, Nolan Diehl, Grant Preston; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded by a great-grandson, Ryker James Balice; brothers, Wampler, Owen, Bernard, John, William, Rodney, Mensel, Douglas, and Roland Hammer; sisters, Jetta Raynes, Janet Roach, Marita Marshall, Rosalyn Pryce, and Doris Helfrich.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at Johnson Funeral and Cremation Service in Grottoes.

A celebration of life will be conducted at 3 PM on Thursday, Dec. 18th, at the Port Republic Riverside Church, with Donnie Jenkins, and Pastor Jace Bower officiating. Burial will be private.
