Paul Childers

May 22, 1946 - October 13, 2025

Paul Gordon Childers, 79, of Fishersville, passed away the morning of Monday, October 13, 2025 with complications from COPD. He was born on May 22, 1946 in Lynchburg to the late Paul Sanderson Childers and Nancy Christine Blanks Childers.

Paul attended Virginia Tech for a brief period and was a lifelong Hokie fan. He left college to join the Navy, serving from 1965 to 1970 and was awarded The National Defense Service Medal.

Paul spent most of his life working in construction, including project management for Mathers Construction and Nielson Construction. He worked on and oversaw many projects during his career, notably the historic renovation of Fairfax Hall in Waynesboro, VA, and the New Street Parking Garage in downtown Staunton, VA as well as operating his own concrete business. He once said that the most fun job he ever had was running the bar for Doug Deffenbaugh at Captain Sam’s Landing in Waynesboro, where he created a “Cheers” type atmosphere and knew everyone’s name. Paul loved people and people loved Paul.

On October 23, 1999 he married Elizabeth Gordon. They enjoyed an amazing relationship, spending their time together embracing a life filled with family, friends, faith, fun and music until her passing in April 2016 from mesothelioma.

Paul had strong faith and was a charter member of Hope Community Church of Waynesboro. In addition to watching weekly sermons from home when he was unable to attend, he liked to give time to the Lord each morning by reading his bible and devotions.

Paul is survived by step-daughters, Whitney Glass Sportelli and Lisa Lotts Alley (David); grandchildren Whit Wagner, Paul Drumheller (Kristin), Megan Shaw (Eric); great grandchildren: Sienna Drumheller, Brooks Drumheller, and Dawson Shaw; sisters, Pat Childers, Debie Dodson (Mike); niece, Nanci Dodson; nephew, Paul “Beau” Dodson; as well as many special friends, including his much loved Fishin’ Pig Family.
