Gary Jobin
Dr. Gary C. Jobin, 83, of Fishersville, passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at Augusta Health in Fishersville. He was born in Washington D.C. on September 11, 1941, a son of the late Robert and Beverly Jobin.
Dr. Jobin attended the University of Virginia and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in English Literature. His postgraduate training continued at the University Of Virginia School Of Medicine. A one year internship in Straight Medicine at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, followed with a subsequent year of Internal Medicine Residency, also at Barnes Hospital. He then served two years with the Public Health Service with the rank of Lieutenant Commander in Anchorage, Alaska, as Assistant Chief of Medicine at the Alaska Native Medical Center. His second year of Internal Medicine Residency was at U.C.L.A Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Jobin then took a three year Fellowship in Cardiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, also in Los Angeles, chaired by H.J. Swan, inventor of the Sawn-Ganz catheter.
Dr. Jobin was board certified by the American Board of Medicine in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases and Critical Care Medicine. He also attained certification in Quality Assurance and Utilization Review. The American Society of Echocardiography awarded him special competency in Echocardiography.
He was a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American College of Chest Physicians, American College of Physicians, and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at U.C.L.A. in Los Angeles.
Dr. Jobin practiced Cardiology at the Sepulveda VA Hospital in Los Angeles as a Staff Cardiologist and Director of the Coronary Care Unit. At the Mullikin Medical Center in Artesia, California, he served as a Staff Cardiologist and Director of the Noninvasive Laboratory, Chairman Department of Medicine, and a member of the Center’s Board of Directors. In Abingdon, Virginia, he was a Staff Cardiologist and Director of the Noninvasive Laboratory.
His interests included scuba diving, as a P.A.D.I. divemaster and in Abingdon served as the Supervisor/Coordinator of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Underwater Recovery Team and as an Auxiliary Deputy Sheriff during Sheriff Joe Mitchell’s term. The medical aspects of diving medicine included multiple courses, many at Duke University, as well as specialized training in the Underwater Criminal Investigation by Cpl/ Bob Teather of the R.C.M.P. and Sgt. Mike Berry of the Virginia State Police.
Throughout his life, Dr. Jobin loved writing short stores, novellas, and novels. Many of his short stories won various regional contests, including first place in the local Sherwood Anderson Short Story Writing Contest. He also flew and was a Commercial Pilot with an Instrument Rating and Glider qualified. As a glider pilot, he achieved a Silver Badge awarded by the Soaring Society of America in recognition of successfully completing required flights in altitude, duration, and distance. His most thrilling glider flight occurred in Minden, Nevada when he rode an upwelling air mass called a mountain wave to an altitude of 17,999 ft for forty minutes.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Jobin was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Jobin and sister, Beverly Elaine.
Survivors include his sister-in-law, Sybille Jobin ; nephew, Alexander Jobin; as well as close friends.
Per Dr. Jobin’s wishes, no formal service will be conducted.
