Fern Jenkins

Fern Ellen Jenkins, 81, of Waynesboro, VA, passed away peacefully at Waynesboro Manor on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. She was born on October 28, 1943, in Waynesboro, VA.

Fern graduated from Rosenwald High School in Waynesboro where she played basketball. She was an Instructional Aide for Waynesboro Public Schools, until she retired in 2016. She loved Jesus and had committed her life to the Lord. She especially took pride in her five grandchildren and great-grandchildren; who all knew that “Maw Maw” loved them. Everyone was drawn to her warm heart and ready smile; she never met a stranger. Fern will be dearly missed by countless friends and family.

Fern was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Harry Lee Jenkins; daughter, LaWanda Jenkins; mother, Elise Hilton; sisters; Vivian Barber and Eva Griffin.

Fern is survived her children: Gwendolyn Jenkins of Waynesboro, VA, Kimberly “Renee” Woodson (Shawn) of Fredericksburg, VA, Eric “Ricky” Jenkins (Christana) of Chesapeake, VA; a special niece and nephew, Sandra Vega of Crimora, VA, Mart Brown of Clarkson, GA.; five grandchildren: Ashley Jenkins of Waynesboro, VA, Venecia Riley (Marcus) of Apopka, FL, Landon Woodson of Alexandria ,VA , Peyton Woodson of Fredericksburg, VA, Venessa Jenkins (Steven) of Fredericksburg, VA; five great-grandchildren: Jaleah Cotton of Waynesboro, VA, Kaiden, Kamryn, and Katana Ogunwenmo of Fredericksburg, VA, Chance Riley of Apopka, FL; sisters-in-law: Frances Turner of Churchton, MD, Tressa Ann Curry of Douglasville, GA, and Bessie Jenkins of Naunet, NY ; as well as many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11am on Monday, August 25, 2025 at Charlton and Groome Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 24, 2025 from 4pm until 6pm at the funeral home.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Waynesboro Manor for the tremendous love and care they showed Fern for the past four years.
