Earl Wallace Chittum
Earl Wallace Chittum, 98, widower of Marjorie Ann (Whitesell) Chittum, of Fishersville passed away Friday, August 15, 2025 in the English Meadows of Fishersville Campus.
Mr. Chittum was born in Spottswood, Virginia on February 2, 1927 and was a son of the late Clyde Wilson Chittum and Lula Bernice (Cox) Chittum.
He retired after forty-four years of service with the DuPont Company in Waynesboro, Virginia. That was his only job after graduation from Spotswood High School and he often said he loved every day of his work.
Earl was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Staunton where he served as a Deacon for many years. He was a former high school basketball referee, a long-time member of the Staunton Lions Club, and was in regular attendance at the Augusta Health Fitness Center in Fishersville until his health declined in the fall of 2024.
Three things were the pillars of his life, his faith, his wife and his family. He loved spending time with them, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who he adored.
In addition to his parents and his wife of seventy-five years, Mr. Chittum was preceded in death by six brothers, Lloyd, Tucker, Burness, Elmer, Everett and Jim Chittum; and five sisters, Jean Brown, Ruth Brooks, Helen Ayers, Modema Smiley and Pauline Austin.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and spoke often of his love for his mother and his 11 brothers and sisters.
Surviving, is a son, Douglas “Doug” Chittum of Roanoke, Virginia; a daughter, Tamara Ann “Tammy” Warren and her husband, Ronald of Henderson, North Carolina; a granddaughter, Ashley McDaniel and her husband, Ray; two great-grandchildren, Kassidy Dickerson and Nathan McDaniel; special friends, Liz Bowles, Linda Beiler and her husband, Allen and Mary Ellen Hershberger and her husband, Jesse; and his many friends in the Mennonite Community.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 7, 2025 in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Earl's children would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the staff at English Meadows in Fishersville for the tender care and attention they provided our Dad. They are saints and will never know how much comfort they give a family dealing with the final stages of dementia and the loss of their loved one. To Tammy, you are an angel among us and we will never forget what you did for our Dad.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
