Derek Wylie Crawford, 62, of Staunton, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at Augusta Health in Fishersville.
Born on September 4, 1962, in Staunton, Virginia, Derek was the son of the late Tommy D. Crawford, Sr. and Carrie K. Crawford. He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Jeffrey A. Crawford, Esq. whose loss was felt deeply by Derek and the entire family. Derek was also preceded by his paternal grandparents, Davis H. Crawford and Janie W. Crawford, and his maternal grandparents, Dora K. Pryor, Marcellus Kinney and Carrie T. Kinney.
Derek was a proud graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, where he formed lasting friendships and became well-known for his easygoing personality and his willingness to help others. His love for learning continued after high school when he attended Norfolk State University, where he further developed his strong sense of community and service.
For recent years, Derek was a dedicated employee of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, where he worked as a Warehouse Assistant. This was a job that Derek cherished deeply, as it gave him the opportunity to serve those in need while working alongside a group of colleagues who quickly became close friends. Derek was known for his remarkable work ethic, his unshakable dedication to his community, and his ability to inspire those around him with his compassion, kindness, sense of humor, and contagious laugh. The Food Bank was more than just a place of work—it was a reflection of Derek’s spirit. His colleagues often described him as someone who brought light into the workplace, sharing his genuine respect for others each day. He wholeheartedly believed in the mission of the Food Bank, and it was through this work that Derek was able to touch the lives of countless individuals, offering not only food but also a reminder of the importance of helping one another.
Beyond his employment, Derek was the proud owner/operator of Crawford’s Home Improvements.  He was highly skilled with his hands for both carpentry and the drawing of art. Derek found joy in spending time with his loved ones. He also enjoyed being the Music and Sports aficionado that he was.  Derek had a passion for life that shone through in everything he did. Whether it was enjoying a quiet afternoon alone, sharing stories with friends, or offering a helping hand to someone in need, Derek’s heart was always open. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, respect, and love that will continue to live on in the memories of all who knew him.
Derek will be forever cherished by his surviving family, which includes his brothers,  Tommy D. Crawford Jr. (Renée) of Midlothian, VA, and James L. Crawford (Stephanie) of Alexandria, VA; his sister, Tammy D. Nicholas-McCutcheon of Waynesboro, VA; his nephew, Tommy D. Crawford III; his nieces, Tamara D. Crawford, Tiara D. Crawford, and Adria B. Derek had an innate ability to bring people together, and his family and friends will always remember the love, laughter, and joy he brought into their lives. Derek’s passing may leave a void in the hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to have known him, but his impact on the lives of others will never be forgotten.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Derek’s life will be announced at a later date, allowing family and friends the opportunity to gather, share stories, and remember the remarkable man Derek was.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Derek’s name to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, 96 Laurel Hill Road, Verona, VA. Derek’s legacy of giving will live on through the generosity of others in his name, continuing his work of supporting the community he held so dear.
