Dwight Foster

February 25, 1952 - September 6, 2024

Dwight Eliot Foster III, 72, of Waynesboro, Virginia, passed away on September 6, 2024 in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Dwight was born in Flushing, New York, to Dwight and Ida Foster on February 25, 1952. As a child, Dwight spent his weekends on a sailboat with his father and his summers in the Hamptons with his grandmothers, building a lifelong love of the ocean. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and cherished many games shared with family.

As a young adult, Dwight explored the country and followed his favorite band, The Grateful Dead.Dwight remained a lifelong “Deadhead”, seeing his most recent show at the Yankees Stadium. He never outgrew his love for live music. Through this passion, he gained numerous friends, such as local musicians The Findells, Wanda & The White Boys, and Robin and Linda Williams.

Dwight was endlessly curious, exploring careers, hobbies, and especially people. He spent time apprenticing with master furniture and clockmaker Irvin Rosen of McKinley, Virginia.Dwight carried his love of working with his hands into his career as an educator.A career highlight was working for the Virginia Department of Corrections in Staunton, teaching and mentoring his students. He later transitioned to Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center, where he spent over 20 years instilling a love of woodworking and making a positive impact on each individual in his program.

After retirement, Dwight acquired his Class-A CDL license to travel the country, working as a sub-contractor for NBC Sports. This gave Dwight a front-row seat to PGA tournaments across the country, further enjoying his favorite pastime, golf.To Dwight, golf was more than keeping score; his passion was the time spent with others on the course.

Dwight was preceded in death by his parents, Dwight Foster II and Ida Foster.

Dwight is survived by his wife, Joy; his sons, Eliot and Austin; his chosen daughters, Madison and Mary; his son-in-law, Joseph; and his brother and sister-in-law, Pete and Debbie.

Dwight always slowed down to admire the beauty in everything and everyone around him. His impact left people better than when he met them. Let our memories of Dwight be reminders to live in each moment and see the beauty just as he did.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Wildlife Center of Virginia in memory of Dwight.
