Verlyn Salter

- March 21, 2024

Verlyn Salter, age 99, a resident of Stuarts Draft Retirement Community, passed away from this earth on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at the Shenandoah Hospice House in Fishersville.
Verlyn was born in 1924 in Florien, Louisiana to the late Minnie and Clyde Jordan.

She spent her childhood years in Florien, graduated from high school there, then attended college at Northwestern State College in Natchitoches, Louisiana. It was during her college years that she met her beloved husband, James, to whom she was married for 74 years until his passing. The lived and raised their family in the small town of Zwolle, Louisiana, until 2011 when they relocated to Stuarts Draft, Va.

Verlyn grew up on a farm during the years of the Great Depression. The lessons that she learned from those difficult, dark days shaped the remainder of her life in wonderful ways. She had learned resilience and faced every hardship with an indomitable, stoic “this too shall pass” attitude. She relied heavily on her God. She prayed diligently through difficult situations and gracefully accepted outcomes even if they were not the answer she had hoped for. She knew God was in control. That knowledge gave her peace in the midst of storms, as well as inexplicable, deep-seated joy. That joy affected everyone who knew her.

Verlyn retired from the Louisiana Sabine Parish School Board in 1980. In addition to her service to public schools, she enjoyed teaching for 10 years in Saint Joseph Catholic School in Zwolle.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Nylon, Yvon, Claude, and a sister, Watha.

She is survived by two children, son Michael, daughter, Gwyn Carter and her husband Benny; two grandsons, Benjamin and wife Kim, Nicholas and wife Carolyn; five-great grandchildren, Abigail, Ben IV, Bree, Lillian and Kaitlyn; a special niece, Robin Lovelace and her husband Paul, as well as other loving family members and friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 29, 2024 at Oaklawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens, 1921 Shutterlee Mill Road, Staunton, VA with Pastor Dave Sawyer officiating.

The family of Verlyn wishes to thank everyone who prayed and cared for her and her family during her brief illness. The gratitude that we feel cannot be express in words.
