Loretta Margaret (Wilfong) Simmers
Loretta Margaret (Wilfong) Simmers, 88, of Mt. Crawford, passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at her home.
She was born on January 29, 1936, and was a daughter of the late Herbert A. and Lena (Smith) Wilfong.
Loretta graduated from Bridgewater High School and attended Bridgewater College. She worked for the Bridgewater Plow Company in the 1950's and later worked as a homemaker until entering nursing school. She graduated from nursing school in 1972 and went on to retire after 25 years of service from Rockingham Memorial Hospital where she worked as an RN. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and help with Bridgewater Fire Department making ham sandwiches and working the lawn party. She also enjoyed picnics and camping with her family. She was a life member of the Bridgewater Volunteer Rescue Squad where she served as a shock trauma tech, and ran countless medical transports from RMH in her off-duty hours.
Loretta was united in marriage on April 9, 1955 to Roy Simmers, who preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 2022.
Loretta is survived by a son, Kenneth Simmers and wife, Nadine, of Mount Crawford; sisters, Janie Beach and husband, John, Sue Boone, Cyndi Smith and husband, "Buck", and Dottie Custer; grandson, Jay Whetzel and wife, Susie; three great-grandchildren, Zachary Custer, Faith Whetzel, and Destiny Whetzel; numerous nieces and nephews; good friends, Eleanor (Jim) Davis.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Betty Glick, and Debbie Custer; brothers-in-law, Fred Custer and Joe Glick.
A graveside service celebrating Loretta's life will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at at Mount Crawford Cemetery, with Pastor Wayne Wright officiating.
The family would like to thank our family and friends for calling, visiting, and bringing food, the Carilion Clinic at Weyers Cave, G&W Ambulance, Bridgewater Rescue Squad, and Sentara Hospice for their care of our mom.
